Since this is a three-hour class, each session mixes short lectures, discussions of the readings, and in-class exercises or videos. As part of the larger goal of leadership training, one goal of the class discussions and in-class exercises is to have the students take responsibility for leading discussions and teaching one another. To facilitate this process we often break into small groups with each group assigned to cover one reading or one aspect of the topic. Improving students’ public speaking abilities is another goal for the union, so in addition to structuring each class around extensive discussions led by students, the final assignment is a verbal presentation.
