Almost without exception students were amazed by the amount of work they would be expected to do throughout the semester. They voiced concern that they could not possible do all of this work and that required in other classes. The bottom line however, is that they were able to complete all of the assignments. One of the things that I stressed at this point was the formation of study groups, or support groups, to help in the study process. I also emphasized that they could not get into the habit of waiting until just before an assignment was due to begin their work. The students did much "self-policing" and "self-help" to ensure that they got their work done, were prepared for class, and carried out the necessary research for the required paper and group project.
