When I teach the course next, I plan to add a monograph to the required reading.
Student evaluations suggest that they like reading articles and that they can
handle the variety of scholarly voices, but I think that reading a monograph is
another important step toward understanding what historians do. With this in mind,
I am assigning sections of Nancy Cott's Public Vows (2000) throughout the
semester and will schedule a discussion section to consider the book as a whole.
I think that this text will add another layer of continuity to the course.
