I warn my students that my class does not rely on the textbook,
but rather on the readings I give them (mostly primary) and what we talk about in class.
However, to ease some of their beginning hesitation I list the textbook chapters
corresponding to the material covered in that unit. Because most of my students have
not been asked before to approach history in the way that I am making them approach it,
the text seems to be a useful "safety net" for them.
