South Kingston High School and Brown University Scholarly Technology Group.
This site contains transcripts, audio recordings, and edited stories from interviews, conducted in the spring of 1998 by sophomores at South Kingstown High School, with 31 Rhode Islanders about their recollections of the year 1968. These narratives, including references to the Vietnam War, Civil Rights movement, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, as well as personal memories, are a living history of one of the most tumultuous years in United States history. The project includes a glossary, timeline, and bibliography of reference, as well as notes from the project coordinators about oral history in the classroom.

The American Experience: Vietnam Online
PBS and WGBH.
This is the companion to the PBS series, Vietnam: A Television History. David McCullough introduces the site with a 600-word essay on the war and 30-word program notes for each of the 11 episodes. Transcripts for each episode, from the “Roots of a War” to “The End of the Tunnel” are available. “Who’s Who” provides photographs and profiles (50–100 words) of 41 major figures. The site provides a timeline from 1945 to 1997 including events leading up to the war, the war itself, and its results, as well as links to 50-word descriptions of events. A 600-word essay illustrated with four photographs describes Vietnam’s recovery from the war. Among the 12 personal reflections of the war (300 to 900 words) provided here, visitors may read the memories of a Vietnamese-born American poet, a U.S. marine, a soldier who guarded the Ho Chi Minh trail, and a Red Cross aid worker. There are nine photographs and 3,000 words on equipment from fighter planes to boots and food. One essay (500 words) describes the My Lai massacre and another essay (1,600 words) discusses the continuing issue of prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action. This site is easy to navigate and mixes the personal and global effectively, making it useful for research into the cultural history of war.

Votes for Women: An Online Exhibit
San Marino Network (San Marino Unified School District and Huntington Library).
A collaborative project of the San Marino Network, this site was created as a companion to a 1995–1996 Huntington Library exhibit on the history of the struggle for women’s suffrage. Middle and high school students designed the site, which provides a virtual walk throught the original “Votes for Women” exhibit. It includes a picture gallery with 78 images of exhibit pieces and photographs used in the companion publication to the exhibit. Each image has a roughly 50-word explanatory caption. The site also includes an online version of Votes for Women: A 75th Anniversary Celebration, the publication that accompanied the Huntington exhibit, authored by Ellen Dubois, Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Karen Kearns, Curator of Western History at the Huntington Library. The online publication contains about 50 additional images from the exhibit. The student creators of this site also wrote essays and provided further information on the women’s suffrage movement, such as essays on the eras, people, organizations, publications, government, laws, and politics behind the struggle, as well as a timeline from 1820 to 1920. The site has no index, but it is still easy to use and is an excellent resource for secondary sources and images on the women’s movement, made by and for secondary-level students.

African-American Women Writers of the Nineteenth Century
Digital Schomburg: The New York Public Library.
Part of the Digital Schomberg/New York Public Library Project, this site is a digital collection of 52 published works by black women writers from the late 18th century through 1920. The site features a full-text database of works by such African-American woman writers as late-18th century poet Phillis Wheatley, late-19th century essayist and novelist Alice Dunbar-Nelson, and Harriet Jacobs, a woman born into slavery who published her memoirs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, in the late-19th century. The site can be browsed by title, author, or type of work (fiction, poetry, biography and autobiography, and essays). Each browse category also contains a keyword search with which the visitor can search for subjects such as religion, family, and slavery. The site also provides an MLA-style guide to citing the works found on the site, as well as brief (approximately 300-word) biographies of the 37 featured writers. This easily-navigable site is ideal for students and researchers interested in African-American history, African-American women’s history, and 19th-century American literature.

Gulf War
Frontline, Public Broadcasting System.
This Frontline site offers a history of the Gulf War from the perspective of those directly involved and includes an extended section on Gulf War Syndrome. “Oral Histories” presents 19 interviews (up to 20 pages each) with eight statesmen, including Colin Powell and Margaret Thatcher, seven military commanders, two Iraqi officials, and two news analysts. “War Stories,” a collection of personal reminiscences (1,500–3,000 words) of five military pilots, are available in text and audio format. Four 15-minute episodes of a BBC radio program about the war are also available as text and audio. An 800-word chronology of events in the war is accompanied by ten maps and 11 pages on weapons, including photographs and essays (500–1,500 words) about each weapon’s capabilities and how it was used in the Gulf War. An appendix provides a bibliography of nine books and nine government reports, as well as 250 words each on press coverage and Iraqi war deaths. A related website on the Gulf War syndrome http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/syndrome/ includes four interviews, 1,500 to 2,500 words each, with soldiers afflicted with the syndrome. Interviews with two doctors and two congressmen and 1,000 words on a possible government cover-up discuss responses. An essay, an interview, and a roundtable discussion, each 3,000 to 4,000 words, address media coverage of the syndrome. This section links to 40 sites about the syndrome and a discussion list with more than 50 entries. The site is weighted towards the American perspective, but will be useful for anyone interested in military history and international policy.

Mathew Brady’s Portraits
The National Portrait Gallery.
A selection of 84 portraits and 27 cartes de visite of prominent Americans photographed by Mathew Brady are exhibited here in a gallery and album. Visitors may also use an index of sitters to find photographs. A biographical timeline provides a sketch of Bradyí s life, a 200-word essay discusses his place in the art world of his time, and a 300-word essay describes his work during the Civil War. Portrait subjects include Daniel Webster, Clara Barton, Walt Whitman, and the actor Edwin Forrest in five different costumes. Cartes de visites present Jefferson Davis, Mary Todd Lincoln, and P.T. Barnum among others. In a glossary of ten photographic terms, visitors can read 50–100-word explanations of processes such as ambrotype and salt print. An 800-word essay with animated illustrations demonstrates the photographic process of Brady’s time. The inclusion of these technical details makes this site particularly useful for research in the history of photography. May also be useful in discussing the history of celebrity.
