Center of the American West
University of Colorado at Boulder.
Understanding what exactly the American West is about is a thorny question, whether it be approached from a historical viewpoint, an ecological framework, or even what the region means to the American populace. Looking at the American West through these lenses (and several others) is what the Center of the American West at the University of Colorado is largely about. Organized in 1989, the Center has hosted 30–40 public events each year on a multitude of Western topics, published its Reports from the Center on important Western issues, and has examined the changing dynamics of ranchlands in the region. At the site, visitors can read and download the center’s various reports, read about ongoing interdisciplinary research projects, and learn about the distinguished lecture series, which has featured speakers such as Richard Rodridguez and Sherman Alexie. —Scout Report

White Trash: The Construction of an American Scapegoat
Angel Price, American Studies Group, University of Virginia.
This site, created by a graduate student at the University of Virginia, provides a useful introductory and historical overview for the persistent stereotype of “poor white trash,” a subject not unknown but surely under-studied. An 8,000-word essay, divided into five sections—“media,” "religion,“ "race,” "lifestyle“ and ”work“—forms the core of the site, though readers will find a handful of illustrations and pictures in each section. ”Media“ is best developed and most interesting. There author Angel Price has written about ”Lil’Abner“ and other comic strips, television programs such as the ”Dukes of Hazzard," and works of literature that have both fostered and refuted images of poor white men and women. A handful of primary documents are also presented here, including brief selections by 19th-century humorists Augustus Longstreet and Simon Suggs. Readers will find, too, the full text of historian Henry Nash Smith’s classic book, Virgin Land: The American West as Symbol and Myth. The background text, which draws from 29 scholarly and popular sources, is uneven yet generally reliable, particularly useful for students unacquainted with the topic. The site is somewhat difficult to read, owing to a dark navigating bar at the bottom.

Albert and Vera Weisbord Archives
Albert and Vera Weisbord Foundation.
This archive contains the transcribed public papers of Albert and Vera Weisbord, American Communists active from the 1920s to the 1970s. As yet, no personal papers have been transcribed. The site contains a 500-word biographical introduction and seven volumes of Class Struggle, 1931–37, a journal that the Weisbords edited and to which Albert was the main contributor. In addition, visitors may read the preface, introduction, and a review of Albert’s book, The Conquest of Power. The bulk of the material contains transcriptions of approximately 75 articles by Albert and/or Vera on topics such as “Moscow’s Betrayal of the Cuban Revolution,” "Feminism and Family Names,“ "The Struggle for Negro Emancipation,” and “Unique Problems of the Spanish Revolution.” Material is indexed by title within subject categories, but visitors cannot perform subject searches. Great American Speeches: 80 Years of Political Oratory
Public Broadcasting System (PBS).
Produced by Parker Payson as a companion to the PBS mini-series Great American Speeches, this site is an online collection of roughly 150 texts of speeches delivered between 1900 and the present. Speakers include several presidents, such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Calvin Coolidge; historian and black activist W.E.B. DuBois; anarchist Emma Goldman; suffragette Anna Howard Shaw; and politician William Jennings Bryan. Many of the speeches have links that provide 500–750 word explanations of the circumstances surrounding the speech, and some speeches also have audio or brief video excerpts. The speeches are arranged chronologically and grouped into decades from 1900 to 1990. Within each decade listing there is a timeline of historical events. The site also offers links to interactive sites on historical trivia, vocabulary, and analysis for the speeches, and there is a helpful link for teachers that includes lesson plans on speech analysis, political debate, and landmark speeches that are appropriate for junior and senior high school history, civics, and language arts classes. This site is ideal for studying rhetoric, 20th century history, and the power of the spoken word.
