Tutorial Orientation

Introduction

Background Reading:

Robert McMahon, "The Republic as Empire: American Foreign Policy in the ‘American Century,' in Howard Sitkoff, ed., Perspectives on Modern America (2001), pp. 80-100

Introduction:

Your grade for class participation will be based on your assessment of how well you contribute to the class discussions. Your teaching assistant (TA) will distribute to you a self-evaluation form (see example on following page). Beginning with tutorial 1 you will evaluate yourself at the end of every tutorial using a ten-point scale.:

0 - absent
5 - attended class
6 - read the assignment
7 - offered one comment;
8 - contributed a fact
9 - asked a good question
10 -provided a substantial insight that enriched the discussion

Note that this scoring system is cumulative. For example, to earn an "8" you must read the assignment AND attend class AND offer a comment AND contribute a fact. Also, you must justify the score with a detailed explanation in the comment box. The teaching assistant will retain custody over the form and will write comments back to you. Your TA has the authority to lower or raise your scores (for example, if you don't explain why you deserve a particular mark, you will automatically be downgraded to a "5"), but the expectation is that after the first couple of tutorials adjustments will rarely be needed.

Your final grade for class participation will be based on the sum total of all your points. All legitimate excused absences must be addressed to your TA in writing. Everyone gets 10 free points for taking the midterm exam.
