LxC Option

  • According to the syllabus for HIST 264, "students who participate in LxC will provide a short report on a document of their choice from the LxC study group instead of a book review for 10% of the grade."

"Short report" means two to three pages.

"A document of their choice" assumes that students have studied primary historical documents relating to migration or immigration in their language of study (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin). Students should therefore select one of those documents for the purpose of their report, in which they should elaborate briefly upon:

    - the writer of the source document
    - the person or audience for whom the document was intended
    - the place and time in which the document was written
    - the historical context in which the document was produced
    - the reason the document was produced and its possible consequences
    - the meaning of the document for the study of migration or immigration
    - the additional learning the student has gained from the document within the framework of studies in HIST 264

  • If a student has neither read nor discussed a primary document during the LxC meetings but has instead read a contemporary news article or watched a movie in the language of the study group, the student may-with the permission of the instructor of HIST264-write an analysis of the news article or produce a movie review. In either case, the student should produce an analytical piece of writing within the framework of immigration studies, bringing together learnings from LxC and HIST264.
