Subject: Loni Ding's "Ancestors in America" video series
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Veteran video maker Loni Ding is in the process of editing the third of a
three part history series called "Ancestors in the Americas. I should say
upfront that I helped to work on it and believe it is a very useful,
serious effort to reframe the history of Asians in the U.S. within a much
broader look at the formation of the Americas from the 16th Century
onwards.

Included in part one "Coolies, Sailors, Settlers" is the Manila Acapulco
galleon trade and a brief history of indentured servitude of South Asians
and Chinese "coolies" into the Caribbean, South, and Central America. I've
worked with a number of filmmakers and have never worked with one who does
such thorough and thoughtful research. She single handedly dug up a
photograph of a mountain of Peruvian (Chincha Islands) guano (sea bird
droppings) mined by Chinese and shipped by U.S. ships to fertilize U.S.
southern tobacco plantations. Most of this history is not know and I'd be
curious for those of you who have used it how it worked. (By the way a new
cut has been edited responding to much of the feedback she has gotten.)

Part two is a extremely well crafted and focuses on "Chinese in the
American West." In includes visits to sacred, but largely forgotten,
historical sites which tangibly illustrate the continued ways in which
Chinese American labor had a lasting impact on the landscape--far more than
the standard railroads and gold mine scenes. You'll see plantings,
terraced mountainsides, remote shrines, etc. Part three is on subsequent
migrations in the 20th Century.

PBS has picked up the national telecast but you can log on to her website
and check out the videos and teacher's guide.

Dear Colleagues,

I have done some internet surfing and this is what I have come up with:

Bloodhound Gang recorded "Yellow Fever" on a CD entitled "One Fierce Beer
Coaster" which was released in December 1996 on UNI/Geffen. You can write
to them at Geffen Records 9130 Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90069-6197.

The group is also scheduled to appear at Utah State University on May 17.
George H. Emmert is the President of the college; his phone number is
435-797-1157. Rose Marie Ernstrom is the Assistant to the Pres., at the
same phone number.

President Mote's e-mail at Univ. of Maryland is
dmote@deans.umd.edu

They also list Jessie Davies as being in charge of Special Events, e-mail is
jdavies1@accmail.umd.edu

Hope this helps folks to stop the hatred.

Dear All,

I have spoken with the assistant to the President at Utah State University
-- they are NOT hosting Bloodhound Gang. The Geffen Records website is in
error. Quite possibly, the group is playing the University of Utah in Salt
Lake City on May 17, but I do not know that for sure.

Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I wanted to offer a few closing comments about our forum this past month.
I've enjoyed reading a number of your comments and learning about the good
work people are doing in North America. The study of Asian and Pacific
peoples and cultures in the Americas is just on the threshold of exploding.
Short stories, poems, videos, music, and yes a variety of approaches to
historical narrative and reconstruction are on the verge of becoming much
more public. I'd encourage people to visit and support the various
community based museum efforts around the country and to actively network
and post your collaborative and individual work on the web. The Japanese
American National Museum in L.A., the Wing Luke Asian Museum in Seattle,
the Filipino American National Historical Society in Seattle, the Korean
American National Museum, the Museum of Chinese in the Americas in New York
are just a few places to check out. The work of the Angel Island
Immigration Station in S.F. bay is perhaps the most important historical
landmark effort now underway, but there is so much that can be done in the
various locales everyone is in. "Dig where you stand!"

I did want to close out this month with a comment about the brief yet
unresolved exchanged between Jeffrey Ow and P.D. Swiney over a critical
examination of U.S. history and the feeling many have about this still
being one of the greatest countries of all time. I imagine we all believe
it is terribly important to understand this nations history in the context
of global studies and not give in to narrow national celebration or
hypercriticism. One of the fundamental areas for new histories that are
both local and translocal, regional and transregional, etc. is the
relationship we all have in our complex social and cultural histories to
natural resources and land use. Such histories for Asia, the Pacific, and
the U.S. with regards to environmental justice need to be researched and
written. I'm writing this in the midst of a New York heat wave which has
just followed an unusually chilly April/May. In this context of the use of
global resources, we have to truly examine issues of equity and justice.
It's not easy and I certainly have yet to do it myself, but I hope we can
begin to write and think about these issues collaboratively and in dialogue.

Best wishes for your work as teachers, mentors, researchers, and writers.
